About our Library

The mission of the Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School library is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.  This mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas; and by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.

-Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (1988), p.1

The HMS library is staffed by a full time Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Jennifer St. Michel and full time library assistant, Mrs. Helen Cabral. We have a flexible schedule which allows collaboration with classroom teachers to create and deliver lessons that meet common goals - subject matter and information literacy knowledge. This delivery model is ideal, as research shows that information literacy skills are most effectively learned in the context of the classroom subject areas, not as a stand alone library skills course. The library activities are based on the 2009 Information Literacy Standards from the MA School Library Association.

Information Literacy is defined by the AACRL as
"... the skills to know when we need information and where to locate it effectively and efficiently. It includes the technological skills needed to use the modern library as a gateway to information. It enables us to analyze and evaluate the information we find, thus giving us confidence in using that information to make a decision or create a product."

Library hours are 7:45 to 2:30, except Monday & Wednesday when the library is open until 3:30.  Students who wish to use the library after school for quiet research must first speak to Mrs. St. Michel to obtain a permission slip/pass. After school attendance is limited and not available every day.

The library has over 10,000 books and 30 computers. In addition, we are a member of the SAILS library network (see "Online Card Catalog" subpage.)  This valuable membership gives us access to over 4 million materials in other libraries and access to high quality databases (see "Research Databases" subpage.)

Students should be aware of and follow all HMS library policies.
